Q&A with Alford and Hoff & Fragrance etiquette

Background

Barry Alford was born and raised in Phoenix Arizona, is a gifted athlete with a career at a Fortune 500 Company that thrived on science, technology and performance. It was here that his link to grooming blossomed, with his discovery of Sirtuins and their ability to prolong cell longevity.

Jefferson Hoffman was born and raised in Minnesota and Arizona State University (American Football) teammate of Alford took a more entrepreneurial career path – arriving in the skin care world, via personal interest.

I recently reviewed Alford and Hoff fragrance and was such a fan that I was the opportunity to interview Alford and Hoff.
With a bottle that looks as good as the fragrance smells, Alford & Hoff makes quite a first impression.  Founders of the company, Barry Alford and Jefferson Hoffman, chose Rodrigo Flores-Roux, perfumer working for Givaudan to create their first fragrance.

1.  What was it like working with world-class perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux when making the fragrance?

Rodrigo is a rare talent, and it was both an honor and pleasure to work with him.   He was wonderful in helping guide us through the process and shared with us his love of fragrance, citrus notes, and how his upbringing in Mexico influenced his love of learning and started him on his path to developing wonderfully unique and amazing fragrances.  We learned a great deal from Rodrigo and we look forward to working with him on our next fragrance.

2.  Typically a prestige fragrance has around 30 – 40 ingredients, your fragrance has a whopping 95! Can you tell me more about this?

Fortunately for us, when we set out to create a world-class fragrance there were no corporate margin constraints set upon us. With pricing flexibility on our side we were able to work with any ingredient we felt would assist us in creating what we believe is the best fragrance out there.

3.  The packaging is great, I love the wooden cap. What was your inspiration behind the packaging?

A Dom Perignon box that we had seen inspired the outer packaging.  We loved the idea of creating not just a traditional carton to house our fragrance, but a special container and stage for the fragrance.   For the bottle, we really wanted the packaging to echo the scent of the fragrance, and with our warm woody background, an elegant walnut cap seemed like the perfect marriage to an elegantly understated bottle that is simply accented.  As Leonardo da Vinci has said,  "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

4.  Why did you both decide to get into the grooming business coming from a sporting background?

We were both into grooming from an early age.  I think we were the only football players that were serious about wearing sunscreen, in the Arizona sun you can be burned to a crisp in minutes.  We both have dry skin so you start learning about moisturizers and before you knew it, we had a full routine after practice and our showers.  Our teammates started asking what we were doing, and how our skin looks so great?  We found ourselves offering advice, investigating the market, understanding what we liked and didn’t like.  We felt so passionate about it we decided to develop our own brand after graduation.

5.  What sort of man would wear A&H?

A&H is for the man that is tired of following the crowd, for the man that recognizes quality and the work that is put into things, and doesn’t need a designer label to justify his purchase.

6. How important is grooming?

In this day and age, we are all judged by how we appear to others, in business, in social settings, even to ourselves when we look in the mirror.  Taking care of your appearance is not only a necessity but should be viewed as a great gift to yourself.

7. What makes you different from other men’s fragrances?

Some say our fragrance is one of Rodrigo Flores-Roux’s best scents. Warm and rich, it uses wood as the very lightest of motifs alongside purified, natural smelling spice.  It’s masculine, yet elides clichΓ©s because don’t be surprised if your girlfriend or wife starts wearing it.  Rodrigo also worked with us to create a scent that controls its own dosage and self-regulates when you put it on, and its dry-down maintains a perfect, consistent volume.  So you don’t have to worry about applying too much or too little.

8. Why did you choose Harrods to launch exclusively with?

Harrods is one of the most well know department stores in the world, with a position that balances the traditional with the modern.  They provide an unbelievable showcase for brands.  We felt they were the perfect partner to launch our brand in the UK.

9. How long did it take to make A&H? Where was it made?

It took two years to develop our fragrance, we worked with industry veteran Gary McNaughten, Givaudan, and Rodrigo Flores-Roux.

10. Do you think a man’s outfit is incomplete without a fragrance?

I think fragrance has its place.  I would never wear fragrance to the gym, but when it comes to going out for business or pleasure absolutely.

11. Over do it or don’t over do it with spraying?

Never over do your fragrance.  You should only be able to smell a fragrance when you are close enough for a handshake or a kiss.   Your fragrance shouldn’t enter a room before you have arrived, or remain lingering after you have left.

12. Is it possible to become immune to your scent so you can't smell it as well?

Your sense of smell tires after constant stimulation. The sense of smell classically cuts off within minutes. Because you can’t move away from your own fragrance, you become used to it. You may think it has disappeared, but others can still smell it.

13. How do you make your scent last longer?

You want to wear fragrance where the skin is especially warm and where there is good blood circulation.  Heat helps diffuse and magnify the fragrance, like inside the wrist, inside the elbows, temples, below ear lobes, base of the throat and behind the knees.   To increase longevity you want to layer a scent.  An easy way to do that is to get a fragrance-free lotion and combine your fragrance and lotion together and then apply.  Afterward, layer the fragrance along at pulse points.

14. Does scent ever expire? I never can seem to get through a whole bottle in 6 months.

Your fragrance should last between 6 and 18 months, if you store it in a cool place outside of direct sunlight.
